Classroom Table and Chair Heights by Age: A Quick Reference Guide

The short answer: a 3–4 year old needs a chair with a seat about 26 cm high and a table about 46 cm high (size C1). Children aged 4–6 need a 31 cm seat and a 53 cm table (C2). Toddlers aged 2–3 need a 21 cm seat and a 40 cm table (C0). The full chart for every age is below.

Correctly sized furniture is one of the simplest ways to improve comfort, posture and concentration in an early learning room. How to Check the Fit

• Feet flat on the floor, with knees bent at about 90 degrees.
• Forearms resting on the table when sitting upright. The tabletop should sit just below elbow height.
• Room for the thighs between the seat and the underside of the table, so children can slide in and out on their own.
• Chair and table from the same size mark, for example a C1 chair with a C1 table. Mixing sizes is the most common cause of poor posture at the table.

What about mixed-age rooms?

Many services use two sizes in one room, for example C0 and C1 in a toddler room or C1 and C2 in a preschool room, with a table of each height. Stackable chairs make it easy to change the mix as enrolments change. Most of our chairs and tables come in several sizes.

What height should educators' furniture be?

Adults working at an adult desk need a C6 chair (46 cm seat) and a 76 cm table, or C5 (43 cm and 71 cm) for a slightly lower setup. For sitting alongside children at their tables, a low adult chair or stool at around the children's table height helps educators stay at eye level without straining.
